MUSIC NEWS & INTERLUDES: Feb. 26, 2012

I wanted to follow up on the rampant "DoYaThing" news (which we should all be well aware of by now) with a link to the possibly leaked 13-minute cut, but however righteous the news, I felt another post would be approaching overkill. So, I took a few moments to scour the interwebs for some overlooked and generally noteworthy music headlines to supplement.

First, here's that Gorillaz+James Murphy+André 3000 extended jam. I searched far and wide for a download to no avail. Same goes for embedded streaming content, so head on over to those news-greedy bastards at 107.7 The End to listen to Murphy's extended electro-rock jam and André's now infamously ad lib refrain, "I'm the shit," which we can only assume was pirated directly from Murdoc's hard drive.

In related news, André 3000 revealed to GQ magazine that there are no plans for a new OutKast album, despite a 2008 interview with Pitchfork where Big Boi indicated the two were recording new material. Bummer.

Last Friday, Spaceman Jason Pierce threw the internet a nearly 9-minute teaser from his psychedelic shoegazy rock group Spiritualized's new album. The first glimpse of Sweet Heart Sweet Light, out April 17, is a jangling happy-go-lucky number -- a change of pace since we last saw Pierce in typically dour form on 2008's Songs in A & E. Stream "Hey Jane" below and check out that bizarre choice of cover art to the right.

The final news bits come from legendary indie hip-hop label Stones Throw who seem to be shittin' the goods over the next few weeks.

The Minimal Wave Tapes, Vol. 2 (available now) is part of an ongoing collection of über rare electronic music released independently on vinyl and cassette by artists worldwide in the mid-1980s. Volume 1 continues to seep into my playlist periodically and is filled with all kinds of lo-fi analogue minimalist goodness.

Listen to the excellent "H.S.T.A." from the Netherlands' own Das Ding:

Then, check out a track from the hip-hop collective Quakers who boast a 35-MC roster grounded by the production crew of Portishead's own Geoff Barrow, his engineer 7-Stu-7, and Australia's Katalyst. Barrow has been a long-time advocate for Stones Throw, making the label and its two iconic producers J Dilla and Madlib a subject of conversation in interviews like this one.
I've long wanted to see Barrow expand upon his love of the post-hip-hop production styles of Madlib. The self-titled debut should sound something like a more beat-oriented Beak> (his most recent non-Portishead project) with rhymes and appearances from favorites like MED, Guilty Simpson, and Aloe Blacc.

Watch for Quakers out March 27 and check out the particularly awesome "Fitta Happier" below, which as the title suggests, re-appropriates some choice Radiohead tracks as, get this, played by marching band! Guilty Simpson and MED bring the ruckus.

I apologize in advance, because I'm going to be pushing this one hard.

Finally, prolific producer and DJ Madlib (born Otis Jackson Jr) will also see his collection Madlib Medicine Show: The Brick drop (pun intended) on March 27. The Brick collects the Madlib Medicine Show series, which saw Jackson set out to release an album a month of mixes, new releases, and never released tracks from his 20-plus years beat-making. Delays extended the project to over two years and 13 albums instead of 12, but it remains an absolute must-have for Madlib and Stones Throw fans alike, featuring rare cuts from the late great J Dilla.

Head on over to Stones Throw for a full breakdown of the series. And hey, Peanut Butter Wolf, I'll take a Brick in my stocking this Christmas.
